Strictly BarkingOVERALL WINNER Fringe World Children’s Event Award and Winner Perth Now Critics Choice Award 2023
Strictly Come Dancing meets Wallace and Gromit in the hit family show from acclaimed physical comedians Ollie Nilsson (Sweden) and Jon Tilley (UK). Get ready for comedy, slapstick, crazy characters, and enthusiastic dance routines!
Fun for both adults and children alike, Strictly Barking is a high-energy performance combining clowning, non-verbal storytelling, and audience interaction, ideal for children aged 3-11. Almost entirely non-verbal, with very simple english, it is accessible to young people with Special Educational Needs, and non-english speakers. Ballroom dancing enthusiast Hogarth finds a new dance partner when he meets Easy Peeler the dog. They decide to enter the Barking Town Hall ballroom dancing competition - but will the power-hungry Mayor and his scheming cat Steven get in their way? Drawing on Jon and Ollie’s physical theatre training at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School, Strictly Barking uses clowning, participatory theatre, and non-verbal visual storytelling to create an engaging performance for adults and children of all ages. Strictly Barking was created with support from the Finfringe Festival and in partnership with The Arts Centre Hounslow as a show designed to be accessible to children with limited or no english. 50% of the school population in Hounslow have English as an additional language. It was first performed in Turku, Finland, in May 2022 and in Hounslow in July 2022, with many children in the audience who had never experienced theatre before. It has since been performed to children and families, and Special Educational Needs groups, in the UK, Portugal, and the Czech Republic, and toured Australia in 2023, where it was the Overall Winner of the Fringe World Children’s Event Award and won a Perth Now Critics Choice Award. |
